Listening: Concerto grosso by Corelli "Christmas Concerto"

What's the meaning of 'Concerto grosso'?

The Italian term means It was very common during the Baroque period. In the Concerto grosso there is a small group of soloists.

Corelli was a violinist and composer of the Baroque era. He wrote 12 Concerti Grossi and established this intrumental form as a popular type of composition



THE BAROQUE ORCHESTRA

String instruments became very popular in the 17th century, when the Baroque style developed. 
The Baroque orchestra is composed by:
String instruments (violins, violas, cellos..) , the harpsichord, organ and somentimes woodwind instruments like the oboe.
