1. INITIAL ACTIVITY: Watch this video (from 55:50 aprox until end):

• In pairs, find information about the 'West-Eastern Divan Orchestra'. Write a brief summary of it.
• Do all the musicians have the same nationality?
• With what purpose was this orchestra born?
• How can they communicate? 
• How many musical ensembles are required to perform this symphony?
• Do you think that the role of the conductor is important?
• What special significance does the election of Beethoven's 9th symphony have?

WORLD MUSIC

Music is a universal language and a universal Art. It is present in all cultures of the world. It is a means of transmitting the feelings and traditions of a culture.

In this unit we will learn about three different songs:

• Small moon - Traditional Chinese
• Kokoleoko - Traditional from Ghana
• Huahuanacá - Traditional form Bolivia
• Tutira Mai - Maori traditional song (New Zealand)
