Google Doodle celebrates Ella Fitzgerald's birthday

Yesterday's Google Doodle celebrated the 96th birthday of the singer Ella Fitzgerald.

Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) was know as the "Queen of Jazz". After a troubled childhood, she turned to singing and debuted at the Apollo Theater in 1934. Discovered in an amateur contest, she became the top female jazz singer for over 50 years.

Her voice quality, with lucid intonation and a broad range, won her 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums.

Ella Fitzgerald produced great recordings with such artists as Louis Amstrong and Count Basie. She also performed several times with Frank Sinatra over the years as well.
